Bosnia and Herzegovina assumes the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January 2011

4 January 2011

In accordance with the usual practice, H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011, held bilateral consultations with Permanent Representatives of member States of the UN Security Council. During bilateral consultations delegations have discussed Program of Work of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

5 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council held the first Consultations of the year and have agreed on the appointment of the chairs and vice chairs of all the Council’s subsidiary bodies for the period ending on 31 December 2011.

The Security Council today held regular Consultations on Côte D’Ivoire and heard a briefing from Mr. Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations regarding his recent visit to the country.

H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011, held a Press Conference with the aim to present the Program of Work of the UN Security Council.

The United Nations Security Council held Consultations on United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) and was briefed by Ms. Karin Langren, the Representative of the Secretary General for Nepal. After the Consultations Elements to the Press were delivered by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

6 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council held Consultations on Sudan and was briefed by Mr. Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations regarding the situation in Sudan and the preparations for the Southern Sudan Referendum to be held on 9 January 2011. After the Consultations the United Nations Security Council issued a Press Statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

10  January 2011

The Security Council today heard a briefing from Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs. USG Lynn Pascoe presented brief information regarding elections in Africa with possible implications for international peace and security.

Members of the Security Council agreed upon the Press Statement on Côte d'Ivoire that was read by Ms. Mirsada Čolaković, Deputy Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations as the President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January 2011.

12 January 2011

Members of the Security Council agreed upon the Press Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of the Haiti Earthquake that was read by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

13 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council held Consultations on the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia and was briefed by Mr. Miroslav Jenča, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on the work of the UNRCCA over the past six months. After the Consultations the United Nations Security Council issued a Press Statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

At the meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Nepal, H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011 made the Presidential statement on behalf of the Council.

The United Nations Security Council today heard a briefing from Mr. Augustine Mahiga, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia. Mr. Mahiga presented brief information on the situation in the country. Following the briefing, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, Prime Minister of Somalia addressed the UN Security Council. After the briefing, the UN Security Council held Consultations on the situation in Somalia and issued a Press Statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

18 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council today heard a briefing from Mr. Haile Menkerios, Special Representative and President Benjamin Mkapa, Head of the Secretary General’s Panel for the Referenda. After the briefing, the UN Security Council held Consultations on the Sudan and issued a Press Statement delivered by H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the United Nations in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011.

19 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council held a meeting on Côte D’Ivoire and adopted a Resolution 1967 (2011) regarding the situation in Côte d’Ivoire.

The United Nations Security Council held a regular Open Debate on Middle East in order to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine. UN Security Council was briefed by Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.

20 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council heard a briefing on Haiti from Ms. Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator and Mr. Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

21 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council convened an Open debate on Post-conflict Peace-building: Institution Building in order to consider the importance of institution building as part of a comprehensive approach to peacebuilding in countries recovering from conflict and on the road to sustainable development. The United Nations Security Council was brief by H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. José Luís Guterres, Vice Prime Minister of Timor-Leste and H.E. Mr. Peter Wittig, Chairperson of the Peacebuilding Commission and Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations. H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina in his capacity as the President of the UN Security Council for the month of January 2011 made the Presidential statement on behalf of the Council.

The United Nations Security Council heard a briefing on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia from Mr. Jack Lang, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Legal Issues Related to Piracy off the Coast of Somalia and Mr. Stephen Mathias, Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.

26 January 2011

The United Nations Security Council heard a briefing from Mr. Atul Khare, Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations and Mr. Ibrahim Gambari, Joint Special Representative for the AU and the UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur. After the briefing, the United Nations Security Council held consultations on African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID) / United Nations Missions in Sudan (UNMIS) in order to discuss the regular ninety-day Reports of the UN Secretary-General on UNMIS and UNAMID.
