Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj, participated in the ministerial level meeting of Group of Friends of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations
On September 24, 2010, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj participated in the ministerial level meeting of Group of Friends of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), in New York.
In his speech, Minister Alkalaj stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to support the principles and activities of the Alliance of Civilizations in promoting a culture of peace and dialogue among civilizations, religions and cultures, considering that dialogue can significantly contribute to strengthening mutual understanding and respect for cultural diversities. He said that the promotion of true dialogue among civilizations is one of the most important political instruments for strengthening peace and prosperity in the world and in this regard, BiH strongly supports the constructive approach of the Alliance in dealing with the challenges of today's global relations and the AOC Secretariat's efforts undertaken to this end.
Minister Alkalaj welcomed the Third Annual Report of the AOC High Representative, in which the main activities of the Alliance during the period of June 2009 – July 2010 are highlighted, and he remanded that at the ministerial conference held in Sarajevo in December 2009, the regional strategy for Southeast Europe has been adopted, and the Action Plan for its implementation has been introduced in May this year. Also, during this period, the Regional Strategy for the Mediterranean was prepared, as a basic document for work within the AOC on the improvement of Euro-Mediterranean dialogue in the region over the next four years. He pointed out that BiH fully supports the coordinated set of activities contained in the Strategy for the Mediterranean, and expressed his expectation that the Action Plan for implementing the Strategy, whose aim is to develop regional partnerships among people and nations, will contribute to improving the cooperation and further strengthening the stability and development in the region.
Minister Alkalaj said that a regional approach of the League had already become a very important mechanism for launching initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and respect for cultural diversity, offering new opportunities for cooperation and leading to stabilization and prosperity. This was also confirmed at the ministerial conference in Sarajevo, where BiH and other countries of Southeast Europe, members of the Group of Friends of the AOC, recognizing the importance of regional dimension of the Alliance, confirmed their commitment to its goals and committed to further strengthening of intercultural dialogue and regional cooperation.
All present at the ministerial level meeting of the Group of Friends of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations were addressed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.
